The year was a huge success for Mike Shinoda’s Fort Minor - their triumphant concert in Singapore on March 1st won the 987 award for Concert of the Year; ‘The Rising Tied’ was Album of the Year; they had 4 songs in the Top 100 (a record number) and these 4 songs were, of course, led by ‘Where’d You Go’ which was the Number 1 Song of 2006. In 2007 we will see if Shinoda decides to continue with Fort Minor, or whether Linkin Park’s return will take priority for him.
The slow paced emotional ‘Where’d You Go’ fitted in with a trend of popular slow paced tracks in 2006 - ‘Chasing Cars’ (Justin Ang’s favourite track of the year) was the highest placed UK song at #5, and was memorable for its relevance to the 2006 Singapore Idol, and at #9 ‘Hate Me’ was apparently the highest selling track in CD stores this year, leading the strong presence of so called Emo-Rock acts, with Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance all appearing in the Top 30, and MCR winning for Best Rock Act of the Year.
2006 saw what could be considered ‘comebacks’ by major artists who, even though their absence might only have been a year or so, seemed to have been off the scene for a while, namely Beyonce, Nelly Furtado, who had 2 songs in the Top 100, and Christina Aguilera who returned with Mr Young‘s favourite song of the year, ‘Ain‘t No Other Man‘. Arguably the biggest ‘comeback’ of 2006 was Justin Timberlake. 15% of the songs in the Top 100 “featured someone” usually a guest rap, and usually it was Timbaland! His most important creation was ‘Sexyback’ (Daniel Ong’ fav track of the year) which appears at #6 in the Top 100, and helped Justin win two 987 awards - Best Male Artist and Best Hip Hop/R’n’B Artist of the Year.
Justin leads a fairly male dominated year in music, with 61% of the songs coming from male acts, although the other 39% is strongly led by the likes of Madonna with two songs in the chart including ‘Hung Up’ at #19, a song which was first heard worldwide on 987FM, and Rihanna, also with 2 songs appearing, including ‘Unfaithful’ at #2, being the most requested song on Say It With Music in 2006. And spearheading the Women’s Coalition is undoubtedly the Pussycat Dolls. With 3 songs in the chart (’Beep‘#10, ‘Buttons‘ #29, ‘StickWitU‘ #17), they were worthy winners of Best Group of the Year.
There was a good showing from local music with Don & Drew’s two songs in the chart including Local Song of the Year ‘Be My Valentine’ and support behind Electrico saw them consolidate their position as Best Local Act of 2006. Looking at similarities and differences in the global music that flows through 987FM, 17% of the songs are by UK acts such as Snow Patrol, Shayne Ward and James Blunt, although it might be surprising that the biggest breakthrough band in the UK, The Arctic Monkeys, didn’t feature in the chart, and the massive UK No.1 ‘Crazy’ wasn’t higher - the Gnarls Barkley track spent 9 weeks at #1 in the UK, although only reached #77 in the 987 Top 100.
The 987FM chart is very much dominated by music of American origin - 69% of songs are by US based acts, although one difference could be Mary J. Blige - in the US her massive impact was illustrated by her receiving the highest number of Grammy nominations, 8, however she only had one song in the 987 chart, and that was only #81, ‘Be Without You’. In the 987 chart, Nine songs out of the Top 10 are from American acts (although Shakira is South American, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ #3 does feature Wyclef Jean), and a good example of an all American band striking gold in Singapore is The Click Five. The 5 piece pop rockers from Boston scored major popularity in Singapore and were heavily promoted with the Hollaback Crew Finals on April 15th, and as an example, ‘Good Day’ wasn’t realized anywhere else in the world as a single, but The Click Five managed to find success with that song in Singapore, and it appears at #33 in the 987 Top 100.
Next year’s chart will probably feature ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’, Justin’s ‘My Love’ and ‘Hurt’ by Christina, but to discover what other songs 2007 will bring us, you have to stay tuned to 987FM.
